Strong start to title defense for Whalers.

CANTON – After taking home the NextGen championship title at the 2022 Women’s Chowder Cup, the Boston Lady Whalers got off to a strong start in search of a title at the 2023 edition when they defeated Performance Hockey 10-2 in U16 division play on Friday  at the Canton Ice House.

Boston waited little time getting going, getting five goals from five different goal scorers for a 5-0 lead at the first intermission. Emma Cerruti, Ana DeCourcey, Lauren Xu, Jane Daley and Christina Scalese were each credited with a goal, while River Grady stood tall in the Whalers net, turning aside every attempt in the opening frame.

Performance Hockey got on the board in the second with goals from Emily Bowen and Delaila Polick, but the Whalers had another five to put up to finish out their 10-2 route.

Scalese (2G, 1A), Xu (2G, 1A), Mary Derrenbacher (2G, 1A) and Sofia Nardelli (1G, 2A) each were credited with a game-high three points for the Whalers.
